Make your surveys easier to manage for users
Our project investigating the accessibility of digital surveys has now been finalised. The project was carried out together with Inklud and with funding from the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Families, Bufdir, during 2024.
The aim of the project was to identify how survey tools support accessibility from both a technical and cognitive point of view. Accessible and easy-to-understand surveys are essential for everyone, regardless of disability, to express their views and contribute to better services.
Results and conclusions
The results showed that surveys created with the most common tools can be difficult to use and understand. Many tools do not fulfil legal requirements for digital accessibility, but unclear questions, poor structure and difficult-to-navigate design solutions also create barriers, causing some users to drop out of the survey midway through.
Of course you should choose a tool that has good accessibility, but that’s not enough, says Malin Hammarberg, Senior UX-designer and Accessibility Specialist at the Funka Foundation. It is at least as important to think about how the questions are formulated and presented so that as many people as possible can understand and answer the survey.
Interviews with web authors show that organisations tend to focus on the technical aspects of accessibility. They rarely have a clear strategy to ensure that the surveys actually work for all users.
Tool providers could also help by offering clearer guidance and features to help users create more accessible and easy-to-understand surveys.
Guidance, training and support
The results of the project are summarised in a report, which also includes guidance for procurers and users of survey tools on accessibility requirements and tips.

We have also developed a training programme for those who work with surveys where we go through what you can do to make your surveys work for everyone.
Of course, we are happy to help you audit and test both your tools and the surveys you create from an accessibility point of view.
