Accessibility in surveys
Surveys are widely used to evaluate activities and initiatives in both the private and public sectors. In the vast majority of cases, digital survey tools are used to create and distribute the surveys. Despite the widespread use of survey tools, there is a lack of information on the accessibility of the surveys produced using these tools.
If only few people have responded to a survey, it is difficult to know whether it is because the survey is inaccessible, as there may be many reasons for a low response-rate. However, previous experience shows that shorter and easier-to-read questionnaires generally have a higher response rate. In a new research project, the Funka Foundation is working together with Inklud to develop new knowledge about accessibility in surveys created with digital tools.
The goal of the project is to investigate how the survey tools help to design surveys that are accessible to as many users as possible. We examine whether the surveys are manageable for people with disabilities, and whether the information provided is accessible and understandable for users of all abilities. The project runs through 2024 and is funded by the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs (BufDir).
Everyone needs to feel that their opinions count, says Kristian M. Simonsen, Accessibility Expert at Inklud. “Inclusion is important in all parts of the organisation, not least in the follow-up work.
In a first step, we will map which survey tools are most commonly used by authorities in Norway. We review the tools based on requirements for both physical and cognitive accessibility and conduct tests with users with and without disabilities. During the project, we will collaborate with Norwegian municipalities and authorities to develop prototype surveys based on real use cases.
The project will, among other things, result in a report that summarises the accessibility of questionnaires produced by the tools, both in terms of physical and cognitive accessibility requirements. The report will be published and disseminated on the web and through conferences and events.
