Web accessibility course for people with visual impairments
With increased legal requirements on web accessibility, there is a significant – and growing – need for expertise. People with visual impairments have unique experience of what poor accessibility means in real life, and are therefore particularly well suited to act as expert users.
Through an innovative collaboration between the Funka Foundation and the Swedish Association of the Blind, we are now able to offer a free part-time training programme for people with visual impairments in Sweden, starting in August 2026.
We are delighted to be able to help more people with visual impairments strengthen their position in the labour market, says Simon Törnqvist, chair of the Blindas Väl Association.
Based on the individual’s own abilities and assistive technology, participants will become well equipped for a professional life as accessibility experts through apprenticeship activities together with the Funka Foundation’s certified specialists in web accessibility and internships with potential future employers.
With this project, we can both empower individuals and meet market demands, says Susanna Laurin, Managing Director of the Funka Foundation. It will be exciting to follow the participants’ development.
The project is part of a series of similar projects and courses where we train persons with a wide variety of disabilities in digital accessibility. Some projects are more technical, others are focusing mostly on being active users who can provide actionable feedback on accessibility issues. Still others concentrate more on awareness raising and understanding the rights users have to complain.
